Stress Awareness Month

Every year in April, Stress Awareness Month shines a spotlight on the impact of stress on our health and wellbeing, aiming to increase public awareness about the causes and cures of stress, while encouraging open conversations about mental health. It has been linked to issues such as anxiety, depression, heart disease, sleep disturbances, and weakened immunity.

In today’s fast-paced world, many people experience ongoing pressures from work, finances, family responsibilities, and digital overload. Stress Awareness Month reminds us to pause, reflect, and prioritize self-care.

Stress is a natural response to challenging situations. In small amounts, it can motivate us to meet deadlines, prepare for important events, or respond to danger. However, prolonged or unmanaged stress can negatively affect both physical and mental health. It has been linked to issues such as anxiety, depression, heart disease, sleep disturbances, and weakened immunity.

In today's fast paced world, many people experience ongoing pressures from work, finances, family responsibilities, and digital overload. Stress Awareness Month reminds us to pause, reflect, and prioritize self care. There are many simple and effective strategies to reduce stress. Stay active, as regular exercise helps release endorphins and improve mood.

Practice mindfulness using techniques such as meditation and deep breathing to calm the nervous system. Connect with others by talking to friends, family, or colleagues to ease emotional burdens. Set boundaries by learning to say no and managing your time realistically. Finally, seek support. If stress feels unmanageable, speaking to a healthcare professional can make a significant difference.

Taking Action

Stress Awareness Month is an opportunity for individuals, workplaces, and communities to promote healthier habits and supportive environments. Whether by organizing wellness workshops, sharing resources, or simply checking in with one another, small actions can have a meaningful impact.

By raising awareness and encouraging proactive coping strategies, April serves as a reminder that while stress is a part of life, it doesn’t have to control it. Prioritizing mental wellbeing is not a luxury—it’s essential.

Stress is a silent strain on the body. Stress Awareness Month pairs perfectly with Move More Month because research shows that even a 10-minute walk can lower cortisol levels.

  • Tip: Combine this with Foot Health Awareness this month by ensuring you have supportive shoes before you hit the trail!

Eye on Health: Women’s Eye Health

Did you know women are at higher risk for eye diseases like cataracts and glaucoma? During Women's Eye Health month, prioritize your vision by scheduling a comprehensive eye exam. If you haven’t had a recent eye exam, call MACT Health Optometry at 209.755.1480 to schedule your appointment.

MACT In Motion

On the second Wednesday of each month, MACT Health is taking our Mobile Medical Unit and Mobile Crisis Unit to Railroad Flat and West Point. Services vary each month, but most months there will be New Patient Registration, Scheduling, and Behavioral Health Services.

Please visit MACT Health at one of these locations if you are in need of medical, dental or behavioral health services.

No appointment necessary, just stop by to receive medical services. Specifically, on April 8th from 10 AM to 12 PM, MACT Health will be offering dental screenings and counseling services at the Railroad Flat Community Center and from 1:30 PM to 4 PM at the Blue Mountain Coalition in West Point.

Minority Health Month: Better Health Through Better Understanding

April is Minority Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the health disparities that persist in our communities. We encourage you to ask questions, advocate for your needs during doctor visits, and lean on community resources to bridge the gap in care. MACT Health’s Native American Services Case Managers are in nearly every clinic to assist our Native patients with eligibility and care. We are here for you!

From MACT’s Kitchen: Native American Fry Bread

Cultural Background

Fry bread holds deep cultural significance for many Native American tribes. It originated in the mid-1800s when Indigenous peoples were forcibly displaced from their homelands and given government rations such as flour, salt, and lard. From these limited ingredients, fry bread was created as a symbol of survival, resilience, and adaptability. Today, it is shared at family gatherings, ceremonies, and community events, representing both the hardships endured and the strength of Native communities.

Native American Fry Bread (Traditional Style)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ¾ cup warm water (add gradually)

  • Oil or shortening for frying (vegetable oil works well)

Instructions

1.     Mix dry ingredients
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.

2.     Add water
Slowly mix in warm water until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

3.     Knead & rest
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 2–3 minutes.
Cover and let rest for about 15 minutes.

4.     Shape the bread
Divide dough into golf-ball-sized pieces. Flatten each into a disc about ¼-inch thick.
(Traditionally, poke a small hole in the center.)

5.     Fry
Heat about 1–1½ inches of oil in a skillet to medium-high (around 350°F).
Fry each piece until golden brown, about 30–60 seconds per side.

6.     Drain & serve
Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve warm.

Serving Ideas

  • Sweet: Honey, powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, or jam

  • Savory: Taco meat, beans, cheese, lettuce (Navajo tacos)
