Moving from Surviving to Thriving: A Community Partners Conference on Trauma

Are you a service provider dedicated to helping others, but sometimes find yourself asking, "Why are we going to talk about trauma? Why is it important?"

We invite you to shift that question to: "What do you know about trauma and its effects on the human population?"

The reality is profound:

  • Do you know how many people are affected by at least one traumatic event in their lifetime?

  • Do you know how many of your peers are exposed to and affected by Secondary or Vicarious Trauma?

A survey conducted in October 2024 revealed that 100% of 180 participants answered yes to experiencing at least one Adverse Childhood Experience.

We believe it's vitally important for all of us, especially as service providers, to acknowledge and address trauma. This topic is often "the elephant in the room," and few are willing to acknowledge its existence, let alone talk about it. But we must talk about it. We must bring this topic out from the shadows and disempower the negative consequences left behind by trauma.

This conference is your opportunity to empower yourself and others. We must learn to move forward without allowing the effects of trauma to dictate our next steps, leading with resilience created through empowerment. We are all more alike than we think; we've all been through something, and we're all here today because we chose to be in the business of helping people. With that great responsibility comes an equally great responsibility to take care of ourselves and those working alongside us.

Join us for the Community Partners Conference, TIC Grant (August) 2025: Trauma: From Surviving to Thriving

This workshop is designed to equip you with essential knowledge and tools to better serve your clients and support your own well-being.

What you will gain:

Part One: Understanding Trauma and Its Impact

  • Psychoeducation on Trauma-Informed Care: We'll elaborate on the all-staff presentation from 2024, providing a deeper dive into trauma-informed principles.

  • Exploring Types of Trauma: Learn about Acute, Chronic, Complex, Developmental, Historical, Vicarious, and Secondary Trauma Stress (STS). Engage in a small group exercise to identify examples of each type of trauma.

  • When to Refer/Treat: Discover how to identify the need for intervention, explore resources for treatment, and understand various treatment modalities and interventions.

    • Includes a mindful eating exercise and a 3-minute guided meditation for self-care.

Part Two: From Work Ethic to Rest Ethic & Healing for Providers

  • Work Ethic to "Rest Ethic": Psychoeducation on the concepts of work ethic and rest ethic, followed by a small group exercise to identify examples of work ethic.

  • Working Through Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue, and Secondary Trauma Stress (STS): We'll recap Vicarious Trauma and STS, and provide psychoeducation on Compassion Fatigue. Participate in a small group exercise to identify examples of rest ethic and ways to move from surviving to thriving.

By the end of our time together, our hope is this:

  • You will see how trauma can impact not only our communities, but your organizations alike.

  • You will learn how to recognize your own trauma and its effects on you, your work, and your life off the clock.

  • You will understand the importance of your own mental well-being, stability, security, and safety, and feel empowered to nurture it.

As we dive into this presentation, we ask you to keep an open mind and begin to ask yourself: "How can I help bring awareness, reduce stigma, and be more compassionate towards those I serve and those I work alongside, who may be impacted by PTSD, Vicarious Trauma, Secondary Trauma Stress, or Compassion Fatigue, or those affected by other Mental Health Disorders?"

Don't miss this crucial opportunity to enhance your understanding, improve your practice, and prioritize your own well-being. Your commitment to helping others starts with taking care of yourself.
