Honoring Every Child: MACT Health Observes Orange Shirt Day
On September 30th, MACT Health joins communities across the nation to observe Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day serves as a dedicated time for our staff, patients, and community members to remember the history and lasting impact of the residential school system, honor survivors and their families, and reaffirm our shared commitment to healing and equity.
Why We Wear Orange
The inspiration behind Orange Shirt Day comes from the story of Phyllis Webstad. In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis arrived for her first day at a residential school wearing a bright orange shirt given to her by her grandmother. Upon her arrival, the shirt was stripped from her and never returned. Her experience symbolizes how residential schools sought to strip away Indigenous culture, identity, and community connection.
Today, wearing orange represents our collective promise that Every Child Matters. It signals that—together as staff, patients, and neighbors—we recognize the past, support survivors, and advocate for a future built on respect and understanding.
Our Shared Participation Across MACT Health
To show our collective solidarity, MACT Health invites all employees to wear orange shirts on Wednesday, September 30th, and we invite our patients and public community members to join us by wearing orange as well. When you step into our health centers, you will see our team standing together in orange to foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful environment for everyone who walks through our doors.
